Letter to Wellington City Councillors about bike lanes

Posted by Patrick Lam on Wednesday, March 11, 2026

Tēnā koutou,

I am writing about the proposed pause on bike lane construction.

I have greatly appreciated the stellar progress in bike lanes in Wellington over the last 5 years. The segregated bike lanes on Cambridge/Kent Terrace and especially on Adelaide Road make a huge difference for people to be able to go from the CBD to Newtown.

I understand that people are concerned about rates increases. People should also be concerned about petrol price increases. Bicycles and e-bikes are not affected by petrol price increases.

Continuing the build out of safe and accessible bicycle infrastructure is thus one important thing that Council can do to help people with the cost of living, by enabling them to reduce their use of petrol.

Please maintain the funding for the construction of new bicycle infrastructure.

Ngā mihi,

Patrick Lam
